Mission Explorers Kenya for Kids

About 11 years ago, I was teaching a kids Sunday school class at my church and needed to buy curriculum. The class was made up of a wide range of ages. Finding a curriculum that appealed to all ages was challenging. Add to it that I also wanted the curriculum to have a missions emphasis, and the task was almost impossible.

I searched the internet high and low and finally found what I was looking for. Only it was better than what I was looking for! It was the Mission Explorers Video Series produced by a ministry called Kids Talk About God. The series consists of 17 videos that follow 11 year old Hillary Welborn on an around-the-world adventure. As Hillary travels to Africa, India, Fiji, the Philippines, and Bolivia, she not only shares adventures in each place, but she also introduces kids to ministries such as Ambassadors for Christ, Far East Broadcasting Company, Food for the Hungry, and many more. Downloadable written lessons are also part of the curriculum.

To say that my kids loved Mission Explorers would be a fantastic understatement. They absolutely loved it, and none of us wanted it to end.

Since I had ordered the Mission Explorers Video Series from Kids Talk About God, I was on the ministry’s mailing list. Imagine my delight when I received an email at the beginning of 2018 saying that they had just returned from filming a new Mission Explorers series in Kenya! The videos were still being edited, and the ministry was looking for someone to write the lessons. Long story short – they hired ME to write them!

The magnitude of the project to someone who had never written something like this before was sometimes overwhelming. However, it has been one of the biggest blessings God has ever given me. What a privilege to be part of a project like this. It has been truly humbling.

Mission Explorers Kenya for Kids is complete and now available to you! This time, 12 year old Jessie Patete travels to Kenya for the adventure of a lifetime. In Kenya, he visits tourist destinations such as Mt. Kenya Animal Orphanage, Kiambethu Tea Farm, and Sunland Flower Farm. Like Hilary in the first Mission Explorers series, Jessie introduces us to wonderful ministries operating in Kenya like Crossway International, Kijabe Hospital, and Straight Up Missions.

One of the things kids will love most about Mission Explorers Kenya is the animals! They will see beautiful footage of giraffes, elephants, crocodiles, hippos, cape buffalo, zebras, lions, and so many more. They will love the “Animal Theology” lessons in which characteristics of the different animals teach important principles from God’s Word.

As I wrote the lessons, I did not shy away from deep biblical principles. There is so much “meat” in the lessons. In a time where lots of fluff is coming from America’s pulpits, it was refreshing to partner with a ministry that believes the unfiltered Word of God is still “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16b) – even for kids!

I know that I could be considered to be somewhat biased, but you really need to get Mission Explorers Kenya for Kids and teach it in your Sunday school, children’s church, Christian school or homeschool. I know that kids are going to love it. How can I be so sure? Because we piloted the curriculum at Three Rivers Church in St. Marys, Georgia, and it was a huge hit! The kids and teachers are still talking about it.

I cannot wait to see how God uses Mission Explorers Kenya for Kids in the lives of kids – and adults! – all over the world!
